  • About the project

Maritime transportation is responsible for around 940 million tonnes of CO2 annually and about 2.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Without swift mitigation measures, emissions due to transport are expected to increase between 50% and 250% by 2050. However, these emissions must fall by 67% by 2050 to meet the long-term EU GHG emission targets. Maritime transport is vital for the Maltese economy with over 95% of freight by volume arriving or departing by sea. The project shall investigate measures to establish an emission control area for cleaner in-harbour shipping in the Port of Valletta. The project shall address these aspects through the use of electric/hybrid propulsion for the in-harbour transportation including the use of alternative fuels (such as LNG) and new technologies (such as batteries). Investigation on the shore connection requirements and technologies for cold ironing of small/medium inland maritime transportation vessels shall also be investigated.
