Post/s of Full-Time Research Support Officer I or II

Project EyeCon+ - Validation of Electrooculography-based Eye Tracking 

Funded by the MCST FUSION R&I Go-To-Market Accelerator Programme

And any other projects undertaken by the Department of Systems & Control Engineering, Faculty of Engineering

 

Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer (RSO) to carry out duties in relation to the EyeCon+ Project which is funded by the MCST FUSION R&I Go-To-Market Accelerator Programme, and in which the University of Malta is the lead partner. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Systems & Control Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering.

 

Applicants should be in possession of a Master’s degree in an area related to signal processing and/or machine learning, and preferably also with experience in processing of electrooculography (EOG) data or biomedical signals. The candidate should have good programming skills, preferably in MATLAB, and possess good English written communication and academic writing skills. Applicants should be self-motivated and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The applicants must be able to organise and prioritise tasks within the project timeline so as to meet interim deadlines.

 

Promising applicants who are in possession of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in electrical and electronic engineering (with a focus on signal processing) or in a related area such as computer science, ICT and related areas, are encouraged to apply and may be considered for the RSO I post.

The project is planned to start on the 1st of March 2024 and the post is for a period up to 18 months.

 

The initial remuneration per annum inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustment shall be €25,709 (RSO I) or €28,829 (RSO II).

Further Information

 

The aim of this project is to validate the software engine developed in a previous MCST funded project called EyeCon involving the control of computer applications through electrooculography (EOG) for augmentative and alternative communication. Comprehensive user testing is planned to be conducted on healthy participants and individuals with motor impairments, as they interact with grid-based graphical user interfaces such as virtual keyboards. This will aid in refining and tailoring the current engine, enhancing its applicability and advancing it towards commercialization.Further information may be obtained by contacting Dr Tracey Camilleri at ([email protected] ). The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Systems & Control Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering.

 

The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:

  • Carry out research as directed by the principal investigator and key experts;
  • Participate in regular technical project meetings;
  • Collect data from human subjects;
  • Produce deliverables and related reports within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description;
  • Keep detailed progress reports and abide to all the conditions imposed by the project;
  • Participate in the project communication activities (e.g., scientific manuscript writing, conference presentation, public outreach activities, organisation of workshops, upkeeping of social media);
  • Travel and attend meetings/conferences as the need arises;
  • Take part in the submission of EU-funded research proposals to sustain related research beyond the funding of the project, if needed; and
  • Perform any other project related task as instructed by the project coordinator and key experts.

    The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

     

    The selection procedure will involve:

  • scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • shortlisting; and
  • an interview and / or extended interview.

    The post is for a period up to 18 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
