Further Information

The aim of this research project is to develop a novel, low-cost, cross-platform, brain-native web browser.

Building on our previous research, this project aims to further develop a novel, low-cost, brain-native web browser as an assistive technology (AT) that can provide thousands of individuals living with highly restrictive motor impairments (e.g., advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as well as stroke patients) unbounded access to the web - and in turn, all that it affords. Specialised BCI systems are typically characterised by high barriers to entry (e.g., cost and complexity to set up), and this project aims to lower these barriers and provide a solution that lends itself well outside of a lab environment. This novel brain-native web browser will open up more opportunities to people who cannot adopt existing off-the-shelf ATs, and who cannot interact using their voice or through eye-tracking technology, in turn allowing them to communicate, learn, work, play and carry out any activity at the core of what it means to be human. This project is aligned with national and international strategies, where research and collaboration on innovative assistive technologies are listed as a priority – along with guidelines and legislation to promote equal opportunities for people with disabilities. Further information may be obtained by contacting Dr Chris Porter at [email protected] .  The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Computer Information Systems within the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.

The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:

  • conduct research and development on project-related aspects throughout the duration of the project;
  • plan, coordinate and conduct empirical research and co-designing sessions with target users, including data collection, analysis and reporting;
  • produce deliverables and related reports within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description;
  • prepare scientific conference or journal papers related to the project;
  • travel and attend meetings/conferences as the need arises;
  • participate in public engagement events; and
  • perform any other project-related task as instructed by the project coordinator and key experts.
  •

    The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

    The selection procedure will involve:

  • scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  • shortlisting; and
  • an interview and / or extended interview.
  •

    The post is for a period up to 24 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
