The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Senior Instructor or Instructor in Philosophy. The successful applicant will primarily be assigned to teach undergraduate philosophy courses in UM’s General Education programme. The area of specialism is Ethics, with a broad focus on moral values and ethical theories. Familiarity with traditional religious approaches to moral values and values in Asian philosophical traditions would be an advantage. The standard teaching load for an Instructor or Senior Instructor is 5/5. Instructors and Senior Instructors are expected to contribute to the student-related activities of the department. Academic research and publications are not required for this position. 

The academic staff of UM’s Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies comprise an international team of renowned and innovative senior and junior scholars. The department participates actively in the University-wide General Education programme and offers PhD supervision across the range of the department’s expertise in both Eastern and Western philosophical and religious traditions and methodologies. 

Qualifications

Applicant must possess an MA degree in Philosophy or a closely related discipline although a PhD degree in a relevant area is highly preferable. Applicants should also have an excellent record of teaching experience at university level, commensurate with their career stage. Fluency in English is expected and fluency in Chinese would be an advantage. 

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in as early as January 2023. 

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP541,450 (approximately USD66,840) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
