The Bioinspired Interactive Materials and Protocellular Systems Group group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) led by Dr. César Rodríguez-Emmenegger at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is looking for a Senior Researcher to lead the “Synthetic Cell” line within the group. The aim of the contract will be to develop fully synthetic artificial cells capable of precise interactions with cells and tissue and their translation to medical applications.

Main tasks and responsibilities / The successful candidate will develop research involving:

  • Lead the synthetic cell branch of the group and co-mentor PhD and master students
  • Develop biomembranes based on Janus dendrimers and amphiphilic comb polymers
  • Introduce new concepts for selective interactions at the synthetic membrane and its characterization (e.g. SPR, QCM-d, immunochemistry)
  • Physical characterization of synthetic cells and their behavior by force and high resolution optical microscopy (CSLM, STED, etc) and cryo-TEM
  • Study the interactions with cells and viral particles with synthetic cells and develop concepts to use them as biosensors and active antimicrobial agents
  • Active role in third party funding acquisition

Requirements for candidates:

  • Ph.D with postdoctoral experience in chemistry/physical chemistry with focus in macromolecular chemistry (a must).
  • Experience in atomic force microscopy, electron and high resolution fluorescent microscopy
  • Experience in synthesis of macromolecules and self-assembly into biomembrane as well as co-assembly with biomolecules. Particularly valuable will be experience in polymersomes, dendrimersomes or proteinosomes
  • Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork and collaboration, Commitment, Proactivity, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking.
  • High level of English
  • Experience in funding acquisition and grant management
