in Educational Sciences, the subfield of School Pedagogy

 

According to the University of Latvia (UL) Strategy (2021-2027), the UL special areas of responsibility are the well-being of Latvia, the study of the Latvian language, history and society, sustainable development of Latvia and quality of life. In order to ensure excellence in science and the UL growth into an internationally recognized science centre, to promote the quality of studies and research in this field, as well as to increase knowledge in the wider society, the University of Latvia invites applications for tenured professorships in the field of Educational Sciences, the subfield of School Pedagogy.

 

The main tasks of tenured professors:

- to identify priority research areas and directions in school pedagogy; to form research groups to solve topical tasks, to develop and apply for international research projects to attract foreign funding; to lead research group applications to project competitions of the Latvian Science Council; to promote international scientific cooperation by participating in transnational consortia and research projects and representing the University of Latvia at international conferences and other events; to present research results in highly cited international peer-reviewed journals;

- to develop or update study programmes and courses in the field of school pedagogy, to introduce innovations in the study process, to conduct lecture courses, especially at the master's and doctoral level, to supervise and review doctoral theses; to ensure the succession of lecturers and researchers by supervising dissertations and involving students in the implementation of research projects;

- to promote the value of education to society by informing different groups of the public about current research directions and research results, to produce popular science publications and to collaborate with the media, local and national authorities, governmental and non-governmental organizations and educational institutions in raising knowledge and awareness;

- to implement the tasks set out in the Strategy of the University of Latvia (2021-2027), to promote the University of Latvia as the leading higher education institution in Latvia, to promote an equal, supportive and inclusive climate for staff and students, to participate in the work of committees, councils and other collegial institutions of the University of Latvia and its institutions; to raise the international profile of the University of Latvia.

 

Main qualification requirements for tenured professorship: 

  • a doctoral degree; 
  • internationally recognition in the field, conduct of state-of-the-art scientific research, knowledge or technology transfer; 
  • an outstanding performance in scientific or educational work or other professional activity; 
  • experience in organizational work and team management in the last six years;  
  • proficiency in Latvian and English at C1 level; for foreign applicants, a document certifying proficiency in the official language, if the study courses in which the tenured professor will be involved are conducted in the official language or if knowledge of the official language is required for the performance of other duties in accordance with the Official Language Law;  
  • general competences – leadership, collaboration and persuasion skills, ability to create and implement strategies and concepts. 

The additional qualifications for each tenured position are listed in the Regulations for the Competition for a Tenured Position.   

 

Documents to be submitted (in Latvian and/or English): 

  • an application addressed to the UL Rector;  
  • a Curriculum Vitae, including a self-assessment of language proficiency, the applicant's contact details (telephone number, e-mail address, address), ORCID iD number, scientific, teaching, organizational and other professional experience, professional development activities, major publications, other information more fully describing the applicant's qualifications and eligibility, information on persons who can provide recommendations or references from cooperation partners with which the applicant has worked or is working;  
  • copies of documents certifying scientific and academic degrees; 
  • a research plan for the next 6 years with a vision of one's academic activities at the UL over the next 6 years, including a research programme in cooperation or complementarity with existing research themes within and outside of the UL; 
  • a completed form "Special Qualifications of the Candidate" in Annex 1 of the Regulations for the Competition for a Tenured Position (https://www.lu.lv/par-mums/vakances/ ), (https://www.lu.lv/en/about-us/vacancies/ ). 
  • for foreign applicants, a document certifying proficiency in the Latvian language, if the study programme in which the tenured professor will be involved is conducted in the Latvian and/or knowledge of the Latvian language is required for the performance of other duties in accordance with the Official Language Law. 

 

The salary starts from 5600 EUR per month (gross)
