Through policy-oriented academic research, JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) intends to enhance the effectiveness of development cooperation in developing countries and contribute to formulation of the international development cooperation trend. Applicants to this post are expected to contribute to the promotion of JICA Ogata Research Institute research projects in collaboration with other researchers and practitioners.

The "Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Support" cluster of the JICA Ogata Research Institute conducts a research that aims to elucidate the reality of widespread and continental migration (including forced migration) in Africa from the perspective of human security (each and every human being), tracing the processes of departure, movement, reception, and even return of migrants, and the fears and anxieties they face. The research aims to clarify the reality of migrants' life at the destination, the relationship with the host society, life after return, the exercise of the right to choose, and hopes for the future. The following are the subject areas and specific duties of the full-time research fellow to carry out the research.

[Work content and job description]
Target area:
Research on: Cross-Border Migration and Human Security in Africa (mainly empirical analysis using semi-structured interviews with migrants):
(1) Human security studies
(2) Migration and refugee studies
(3) African area studies (East Africa, West Africa, Southern Africa)

[Work description]
(1) Formation of new research projects (literature review, development of research hypotheses, etc.)
(2) Conducting research (exchanging views with co-researchers, project sector officials, external experts, etc., organising research meetings, following up on international discussions in related fields, planning and conducting surveys to collect research data, writing research results (articles, policy notes and books, etc.), etc.)
(3) Disseminating research results (presentations at seminars, conferences, international meetings, etc., lectures at universities and training projects, contributions to results dissemination events, contributions to the Institute's website, etc.)
(4) Other related tasks, including liaison and coordination, etc., associated with the above (1) to (3).

In the implementation of the tasks, the research fellow is expected to formulate new research in line with the direction of the JICA Ogata Research Institute, but may be asked to participate in research projects already underway or planned by the JICA Ogata Research Institute as a research contributor. In addition, active collaboration with the other programme department of JICA is encouraged when conducting research.
