Term of employment:

When hired as a tenure-track faculty member: 3 years.

After the expiration of the term, reappointment may be made for a period not exceeding two years. However, the total period of continuous employment as a tenure-track faculty member may not exceed seven years. Professors (tenure-track) have a maximum of five years. For details, please refer to “10. Tenure -track Position" below.

*Please note that if you reach age 70 during your term of contract, your contract will end in the academic year in which you reach age 70.

*The method for determining reappointment as a tenure-track faculty member or change of status to a full-time faculty member shall be in accordance with the regulations of the University and the internal rules of the Waseda Center for a Carbon Neutral Society. Details of the assessment summary will be provided after the decision to hire is made.

*The individual will be subject to an upper limit on their period of continuous employment if the following two conditions apply: 1) regardless of employment status, the individual has had an employment contract with the university subsequent to April 2013 and 2) has not ceased employment with the university for a period of six months or longer prior to the hiring date for this position. Therefore, in some cases, the statements above may not apply with regard to the contract period and the availability and duration of reappointment. In addition, depending on the continuous duration of an individual's employment contract, there may be cases in which the individual will not be considered eligible for selection for the status in question (i.e., the tenure-track position).

Status:

Whether the position is for what status the selection will be conducted, will be indicated at the time of interview, based on a comprehensive assessment of research and educational achievements.

Status if hired as a tenure-track faculty member: Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenure track) or Assistant Professor (tenure track). On a side note, a tenure-track faculty member is given the title “JX Nippon Mining & Metals Endowment Chair”.

 Tenure-track Position:

General Idea of Tenure-Track Positions in Waseda University: (Details will be provided at the time of the second round of selection.)

A tenure-track position at Faculty of Education and Integrated Arts and Sciences shall be appointed either as Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (tenure-track), for three years in the first term, followed by two years of reappointment and an additional two years of reappointment, for a total of up to seven years.

As a general rule, the interim review shall be carried out in the second semester of their third year (sixth semester) following their appointment and completed within their first three-year term on the tenure track. When a tenure-track faculty member passes the interim review, their first reappointment of two years shall be confirmed before the end of the initial appointment (three years)

By default, the final review shall be carried out in the second semester of their fifth year (tenth semester) and completed by the end of the fifth year on the tenure track. When the tenure-track faculty member passes the final review, the faculty member will become a tenured faculty member from the following semester.

The second reappointment of two years may be granted to the tenure-track faculty member who fails the final review. The tenure-track faculty member may request an interim review or a final review at any time in or after the second semester of their second year (fourth semester) following their appointment.

Qualifications:

(1)Hold a doctoral degree (Ph. D), and Those who have excellent achievements in the fields related to resource recycling and carbon neutrality.

(2)Those who have no tenure-track teaching experience at Waseda university

(3)Ability to work in Japanese without hindrance

Working conditions:

(1) Working hours

Regular working days and working hours (starting and ending times, rest periods) shall be in accordance with Waseda University regulations. The discretionary labor system for professional work (8 hours of deemed work per day) will apply, and decisions on the means of performing work duties and time allocation for research will, due to the nature of research work, be left to the discretion of the individual.

(2) Salary, allowances, and commuting expenses

As prescribed in the Waseda University regulations.

(3) Holidays

These are Saturdays, Sundays, year-end and New Year holidays, national holidays, compensatory holidays when classes are held on some national holidays, and the Anniversary of the University Founding. However, this excludes days on which the university has determined in advance that classes will be held.

(4) Leave

Leave as stipulated by the Labor Standards Act and other relevant laws and regulations, and days specifically designated by the university.

(5) Social insurance

Employees will be enrolled in Employees' Pension Insurance, Health Insurance, Workers' Compensation Insurance, and Employment Insurance.

(6) Severance / retirement benefits

Not paid. However, if the individual concerned is subsequently hired as a tenured faculty member, the period of employment on which the basis of the retirement allowance for full-time faculty members is calculated shall be counted from their date of appointment as a tenure-track faculty member before the change of status.
