Offer Description

[Background of the recruitment and description of the project]
* Background of the recruitment and description of the project
In the field of space astronomy and astrophysics, the goals of JAXA/Institute of Space and Aeronautical Science (ISAS) are to “understand the origins of the space-time and matters” , “study the possibility of life in the universe”, and to study physics in the extreme phenomena in the universe. To address these goals, ISAS promotes science satellite missions in various observational and experimental methods.
This call for proposals is for one Assistant Professor who is engaged in development research contributing to pioneering space telescopes or space physics experiments that need precise control and measurement technology.
To conduct high-precision observations or experiments in space, precise control and measurement technologies for telescopes or spacecraft themselves are required. These technologies will be realized through close combination of science and engineering works. For this Assistant Professor position, we expect a researcher of astrophysics to tackle such scientific challenge and to set her/his goal of development research that leads to potentially feasible space mission to be realized in the future.
It is required that an applicant has achievements or experience in science instrumentation for astrophysics although there is no specification for the current or previous research fields of the applicant.
We expect this Assistant Professor to have global insight on the advanced science instrumentation for space missions, and also to actively engage to the development of the on-going and future programs with the advanced technology required for the missions despite his/her previous interest.

[Work content and job description]
The Job Description of the Assistant Professor is,
in cooperation with the staff members in ISAS,
(i) To engage in development research contributing to pioneering space telescopes or space physics experiments that need precise control and measurement technology
(ii) To contribute to the ISAS current or future mission programs
To carry out the above duties, the specially appointed Assistant Professor must meet at least the following conditions.
- Have high motivation to actively promote and to contribute to the space science satellite missions
- Have achievements in the research of science instrumentation for astrophysics.
- Be capable of supporting to teach and direct graduate students.
ISAS/JAXA functions as a hub for the space science activities in Japan. While ISAS is a science institute of Japanese space agency JAXA, it is also embedded in the collaboration network among Japanese universities. Flight projects are the keys to promoting space science. In the network, ISAS, teaming up with other JAXA members as well as academic members outside JAXA, plays the special role of materializing flight projects. Thus, ISAS members are expected to play vital roles in running the projects.
We are looking for a highly motivated staff who can carry out his/her academic research in a project-oriented style, in collaboration with university researchers under the inter-university framework. Active participation to various JAXA projects and R&Ds to demonstrate his/her academic expertise is also expected. Human resource development for future space development and utilization is anticipated as natural outcome of the above-mentioned activities.
