Workplace Description

The candidate will be working in the Integrated Readout ASICs and Image Sensors (IRIS) unit of FBK-SD. IRIS carries out R&D activities on advanced readout ASICs and image sensors fabricated in standard CMOS technologies. The main research activities of the group are on the design, characterization and integration into compact modules of advanced image sensors and readout circuits for radiation detectors. More information about IRIS is available at https://sd.fbk.eu/en/research/iris-integrated-radiation-and-image-sensors/ .

Background information and description of research projects

This position is offered within the NQSTI project of the Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR), Partenariato esteso 04: Scienze e Tecnologie Quantistiche (PE 0023). NQSTI targets the creation of the National Quantum Science and Technology Institute (NQSTI), a consortium that will team up Italian entities carrying out competitive and innovative research in the field of quantum science and technology (QST) with the final aim of future industrial innovation in this field. NQSTI will allow updating technical facilities and strengthening the QST community in the next few years, and it will drive this community into an ordinary and sustainable condition of increased impact, visibility, and capacity to modernize and support the competitiveness of the Italian economy.

NQSTI is organized in 9 Spokes. The present position is offered within  Spoke 7 leader.

Spoke 7 leader focuses on the development of quantum systems for application in the fields sensing, imaging, simulation and communication. The goal is to implement quantum objects in demonstrator systems and to verify them in real-world applications.

Job Description

The successful candidate will work primarily on the development of highly innovative CMOS image sensors, including sensors based on avalanche photon detectors and with embedded processing capabilities. The work will be mainly performed in the context of quantum science and technology for quantum enhanced imaging microscopy. The candidate, although with a strong focus on the mixed-signal integrated circuit design, is expected to participate to the entire development flow in a cooperative and structured team, starting from the modelling of the detector to the definition of the sensor architecture, from the design and simulations of the circuit schematics to the chip layout, and finally taking care of the electrical and functional characterization of the fabricated devices up to the realization of prototypes at the level of modules to be integrated into larger systems. The activities will be carried out in collaboration with other researchers of the team, and it will be requested to actively participate in meetings with project partners. Finally, the candidate is requested to actively contribute to the scientific dissemination of the group.
