Offer Description
This project will develop mechanical models for the propagation of gas-filled fractures. The mechanics of propagation of fluid-filled fractures has been clarified only for fractures filled with incompressible fluids, so that these formulations cannot be applied to gas-filled fractures. At volcanoes, degassing may occur through different mechanisms such as free bubble ascent in low-viscosity melt, flow through permeable bubble networks, flow through pre-existing fractures, and through hydraulic fracturing. The latter has been rarely studied, yet it might represent a very common mechanism for the degassing of magmas stored at depth in systems lacking an open conduit. We will develop scaling relations, analytical and numerical models to simulate the propagation of gas-filled fractures with application to Vulcano, Italy.
