Post Doc position in ultrafast optical approaches for DNA sequencing and protein identification - (...
Project: ProID
Commitment & contract: up to 3 years collaborator contract
Location: Genova
WHO WE ARE
At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarter is strictly inter-connected with our 11 centres around Italy and two outer-stations based in the US for a truly interdisciplinary experience.
YOUR TEAM
We are looking for a brilliant Researcher/Post Doc (depending on the seniority of the candidate) to work in the context of an ambitious and visionary European FET project (ProID GA 964363) within the Plasmon Nanotechnology Research Line led by Dr Francesco De Angelis. We aim to enable future technologies for protein and DNA detection and sequencing at single molecule level by means of ultrafast Raman and/or Fluorescence Spectroscopy. Research subjects: single molecule sequencing, DNA sequencing, protein identification, nanopores, plasmonics, ultrafast spectroscopies, nanofluidics, biophysics, nano-optics, nano-photonics.
The objective of this research is to develop an ultrafast Raman and Fluorescence platform able to identify and to sequence DNA and proteins at single molecule level. To this aim, we will combine innovative plasmonic nanopores and microfluidic chipsets with next generation ultrafast time-resolved detectors. State-of-the-art machine learning techniques in combination with bioinformatics approaches will be developed to analyze the data. The development of a simple, fast, sensitive and low-cost technique for protein/DNA identification and sequencing may would open a new paradigm in proteomics/genomics and could bring the early diagnosis assays and personalized treatments envisioned for future medicine. Notably, the development of ultrasensitive Raman technologies able to analyze liquid samples in flow-through schemes and with high throughput rates will pave the way to a new generation of detection devices suitable for many different purposes, not only the future protein market but also food analyses, quality control and safety assessment of market compounds, water pollution, and many others.
Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:
Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments and make modifications to existing procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular studies.
Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes and assemble data sets from experimental results.
Review laboratory methods, manuals, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments. Review work of lower level laboratory personnel and assist in training new personnel.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
A PhD in Physics, Engineering, or related fields.
strong background in the field of nano-optics and plasmonics
experience in time resolved spectroscopies (preferably Raman and Fluorescence at femto/pico second level), and and in the design and assembly of an optical setup
A strong publication record
The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data
Documented experience in coaching junior scientists
Good command in spoken and written English
