Post-doc Functional Memory Network in collaborative AI for context awareness and action planning in robotics - (21000089)

Project: PROMEN-AID, Proactive Memory iN AI for Development project (G.A. SGA3 – 945539)

Commitment & contract: temporary contract

Location: Genoa, Via Enrico Melen 83

WHO WE ARE

At IIT we work enthusiastically to develop human-centered Science and Technology to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times and transfer these technologies to the production system and society. Our Genoa headquarter is strictly inter-connected with our 11 centers around Italy and two outer-stations based in the US for a truly interdisciplinary experience.

YOUR TEAM

You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where bioengineers, computer scientists, robotics engineers but also computational scientists, neuroscientists, biotechnologists and other experts collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research.

In particular, the CONTACT Research Line is coordinated by Alessandra Sciutti, who has extensive experience in Cognitive Architecture for Human Robot Interaction.

The research focus is to overcome the limitations of current human-machine co-working, where often machines and humans just work in the same space, to obtain a novel form of collaboration, in which the two partners can actually perform joint actions, establish mutual understanding and achieve real cooperation. To this aim, it is crucial to endow robots with the same degree of predictivity and intuition that characterizes humans, enabling them to understand and adapt to the other’s feelings, goals and needs.

To achieve this goal, we focus on the investigation of the human perceptual, motor, and cognitive skills supporting efficient interaction. In particular, we also exploit robots as unique measurement tools for the systematic study of social interaction. This includes the investigation of the mechanisms supporting mutual understanding in human-human and human-robot interaction, with a focus on identifying the minimal verbal and non-verbal signals necessary to enable intuitive communication and  the implementation on the iCub humanoid robot platform of the derived models, to validate the theories, and bring forward a new generation of adaptive technologies, able to support and assist non-expert user.

Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:

  • Exploiting functional memory networks and related AI in a cognitive architecture to improve human robot collaboration;
  • Design of control systems for dextrose mobile robots aiming at natural human-robot collaboration;
  • Development of an AI solution for context awareness in collaborative unstructured manufacturing contexts;
  • Development of an AI solution for action planning in collaborative unstructured manufacturing contexts.

This open position is financed by European Commission through HBP (Human Brain Project) project CEoI for SGA3 – Application of functional architectures supporting advanced cognitive functions to address AI and automation problems of industrial and commercial within the awarded PROMEN-AID, Proactive Memory iN AI for Development project (GA-945539).
