WE ARE

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society.
The current vacancy is with the Unit Economic and Financial Resilience of the Directorate for Fair and Sustainable Economy.

The Unit contributes to the development of European Union policies based on top-class research on economic and financial resilience. The Unit provides scientific evidence to support policy making in the areas of: macroeconomic surveillance and forecasting, modelling post-COVID and twin-transition economies; analysis of foreign direct investments and multinational enterprises; wellbeing, fairness and resilience; sustainable and digital finance, financial stability. The Unit also supports EU policies towards a fair and sustainable economy by communicating scientific data, methods, tools and knowledge in this policy area.

The position is meant to cover activities in the JRC activity portfolio number 20 “Towards an inclusive and resilient society: social justice and fair twin transition ” using models and data analysis to study economic and societal aspects of the fairness of the green transition, resilience, social capital, and the measurement of sustainable and inclusive wellbeing ‘beyond GDP’.

WE PROPOSE

The jobholder will join the JRC team working on the measurement of sustainable and inclusive wellbeing ‘beyond GDP’, the environmental footprint of household consumption, the ability to cope with shocks and navigate transitions (resilience) and social capital, for the purpose of informing and supporting the policy process within the Commission.

The new colleague will in particular develop quantitative studies on topics like the impact of reforms and social investment on resilience, equivalent-income type monetary wellbeing measures at the micro level, the measurement of social capital, or the environmental footprint impact of changes in household consumption behaviour. S/he will also contribute to prepare and provide written reports and oral presentations for the purpose of informing and supporting the policy process within the Commission.

Skills/Qualifications

WE LOOK FOR

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with strong quantitative skills and a solid expertise in data analysis, modelling and econometrics applied to finance (broadly defined), notably including banking, insurance and financial markets.

The ideal candidate must have (essential requirements):

  • Ph.D. or a minimum of 5 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies;
  • Background in Finance/Economics with experience in quantitative analyses, modelling and econometrics, including strong data analysis background, proven by studies or research based on the use of data and statistical methods;
  • Experience in conducting research on relevant topics, such as: banking and finance, financial markets, financial regulation or systemic risk;
  • Good knowledge of one or more statistical and computational modeling tools, including programming, such as: Matlab, Stata, R …;
  • Thorough knowledge of spoken and written English (C1), including the ability to write technical and/or policy reports;

The ideal candidate should have (desirable):

  • Advanced programming and solutions deployment skills in at least one of the following: Matlab, R, Python, Julia;
  • Experience in working with market data and/or micro data on companies (including banks);
  • Experience in working with large/mixed datasets.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate:

  • Commitment, motivation and proactivity in pursuing projects;
  • Ability to work independently, including the effective management of own workload, and also as a part of a team;
  • Ability to identify and focus on the essential elements of issues and processes so as to achieve established goals efficiently;
  • Ability to adapt to changing plans and priorities.
