Design and characterization of heterogeneous catalysts and study of the reaction of levulinic acid...

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: 10 May 2022

The project LEVANTE deals with the development of new catalytic processes for the valorization of levulinic acid and its esters, that derive directly from lignocellulose. This project will be focused on three classes of compounds: (i) levulinic ketals, used in industry as solvents, fuel additives, plasticizers or biodegradable surfactants; (ii) diphenolic acid, employed for epoxy resin and polycarbonate production; (iii) γ -valerolactone and other reduction products, finding application as green solvents, biofuels and platform chemicals. LEVANTE will base on the design of new catalysts, in particular, by tuning their acid-base properties. LEVANTE will be developed in line with the principles of green chemistry, especially regarding the catalysis, the use of bio-based feedstocks, the maximization of atom economy and the reduction of waste, to make the target compounds fully renewable, and LCA evaluations for all the investigated processes will be carried out.
