Offer Description
The objective of this project is to engineer the membrane of an artificial cell in order to induce and control processes for the release of signal molecules, drugs, and vaccines in response to environmental stimuli. The candidate should develop two types of systems: a) a system in which the membrane is sensitive to pH variations and its permeability can be controlled with autocatalytic (pH-clock) and oscillating reactions; b) a system far from equilibrium (such as Belousov-Zhabotinsky or similar) that is sensitive to light stimuli, which can influence membrane permeability in conjunction with the use of azobenzene-based surfactants. The candidate will need to have experimental skills in the chemistry of systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium and in the chemistry of dispersed systems. Moreover, the candidate will need to have basic skills in the kinetic modeling of chemical reactions (both ODE and PDE).
