The Project: CoPilot-AI

Wildfires have swept across Europe over recent years resulting in loss of human-life, forcing thou-sands to evacuate and causing damage to homes, infrastructure, livestock and the local environ-ment. Response to wildfire-events in Ireland involves multiple government departments, agencies and external organisations including: the Air Corps and firefighters on the frontline. The current challenge revolves around how we can better manage our response to wild-fire events here in Ire-land, to reduce the threat to human-life as well as the economic and environmental cost.

The highly-experienced CoPilot-AI interdisciplinary research team plan is carrying-out a focused 12-month project employing the latest AI technologies (Drones, Robotics, Sensors, Machine Learn-ing), constructing a Common Operational Picture (COP) digital platform, capable of smart multi-thematic sensor data-capture, highly-automated data-fusion, deep-learning & analysis, enabling more effective information-sharing and decision-making. Key disruptive-technology areas will in-clude novel in-field drone robotic-sensing platforms, dynamic terrain and scene-analysis and multi-criteria risk-modelling.

The Role

This research project will generate spatial-temporal datasets from various sources: Spaceborne Satellites, Aircraft, Drones, in and Mobile Devices. Examples of these datasets include optical (RGB, video, hyperspectral, multispectral, thermal), LiDAR, and Navigation data. These multimodal datasets will be captured using various sensors platforms and stored on a petabyte scale (Microsoft Azure)  cloud platform.

We are seeking 2 x Web developers to work with the project PIs and senior researchers to help design, code and support various spatial-temporal data-handling functions including; ingestion, storage, discovery, fusion, analysis, modelling, visualisation and reporting. The successful candidates will work closely with the Principal Investigators (PIs), Research Manager (PM) and research team to support the various analytical and modelling R&D activities of the wider CoPilot-AI research team, partners and collaborators. This is an ideal opportunity to gain experience working with AI including high-end robotics; Drones, UGVs and a variety of sensor & Machine Learning technologies to help architect & code an Emergency Response Web App.
