Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 within Geary Institute for Public Policy.

The European Social Survey (ESS) is an academically driven cross-national survey that has been conducted across Europe since 2001. Every two years, face-to-face interviews are conducted with newly selected, cross-sectional samples. The survey measures the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of diverse populations in more than thirty nations.

The Geary Institute for Public Policy is National Coordinator for the Irish module of the current round of the ESS (round 11) and has also been National Coordinator of rounds 9 and 10. The Institute wishes to recruit a social scientist with strong quantitative analysis skills who will increase the academic research outputs from the Irish modules of the ESS. S/he will be a social scientist with excellent quantitative skills. S/he will work with the PIs to analyse the results of the Irish module of the ESS, compare these with the results of ESS modules for other countries and produce high quality academic publications from the results. S/he will also write user guides, technical papers and run training and information events intended to encourage greater use of the Irish module of ESS. They will also be expected to supervise interns and run competitions to promote ESS usage.

This is an advanced academic research role, building on your prior experience as a post-doctoral fellow, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

  • Statistical analysis of the results of the Irish module of the European Social Survey (ESS) and comparative analysis of the results with ESS data for other countries
  • Publication of the results in Geary Institute for Public Policy Working Papers and other high quality academic outlets including peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and books
  • Production of technical papers and user guides on the use and analysis of the Irish Module of the ESS
  • Running training and information events for potential users of the Irish module of the European Social Survey to encourage greater take up of this facility.
  • Running and judging competitions and awards for analysis of the Irish module of the European Social Survey
  • Supervising student interns who will conduct analysis of the Irish module of the European Social Survey.

Salary range: €46,906 - €51,035 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
