Role Overview

The post holder will carry out research on the PROFESS 12 research project, funded by the HEA as part of the North South Partnership funding scheme. The Senior Research Assistant will work in a research team comprising the PI from TU Dublin and another PI and Research Assistant from Ulster University. This is a part-time post (0.5FTE).

PROFESS 12 is the acronym for “PROFessional skills for Engineering students - Summer School to achieve SDG 12”. The project aims to develop Professional Skills in Engineering Students through an innovative and inclusive Summer School designed to equip students (women and men) with the intercultural skills necessary to meet the SDGs. Our previous research has shown that engineers of the future need much more than mere technical skills; they need to be able to collaborate with others on a global scale, hence they need intercultural skills.

This project begins by translating global research on engineering skills requirements to a local

level: we will ask engineering employers, academics and students for their views on skills requirements. We will analyse their responses taking into account the diversity of their roles, gender and cultures.

Using those skills, we will then design, trial and evaluate a five-day Summer School with 20 students from North and South. The Summer School will be designed with academics and students in collaboration (co-created) and will focus on a project which will help achieve SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) in a local context. We will ensure the Summer School is designed to take into account those with disabilities and different learning styles.

The Summer School will be the vehicle for learning about and understanding each other’s cultural backgrounds, challenging stereotypical perceptions about growing up in the North and South, and exploring what their aspirations are for life on a shared island in the future.

Cultural diversity will be explicitly addressed in the Summer School and will be enhanced by workshops with a range of community leaders from both jurisdictions, and team building activities explored together.

Finally, we will evaluate how effective the Summer School was in developing the students’ skills and in building sustainable relationships between those from North and South to contribute to the Shared Island Initiative goals.

The post is open to graduates of all disciplines who have an interest in this type of qualitative and quantitative research.
