Research Scientist, UCD School of Archaeology, 18 month post

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Ireland,
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 17 Aug 2021

Applications are invited for an 18 month post of a Research Scientist within UCD School of Archaeology.

Applications are invited for a 18-month research position as part of a joint UK-Ireland project, 'Project Radiocarbon' - Big Data, integrated cross-national heritage histories' funded by the Irish Research Council and Arts Humanities Research Council. The position available is in the field of archaeological radiocarbon dating. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in archaeology with ideally expertise in radiocarbon dating and professional archaeological practice in Ireland

Project Radiocarbon is an 18-month project to provide the first transnational, open access, live-update and interactive map-based digital repository for radiocarbon dates. By assembling and validating the radiocarbon (14C) data along with all their metadata from across the islands of Ireland and Britain within a sustainable and searchable archive that is accessible to academia, heritage bodies, practitioners and the public, the project will safeguard the value of these radiocarbon dates for future research.

The PDRA appointed will undertake research for the IRC-funded strand of the project through data collection and cleaning to resurrect sufficient attributes of 14C measurements in datasets, as well as developing schools' educational resources, and visualisation tools. The project will work across Britain and Ireland, but their role will primarily focus on Ireland and Wales. They will contribute to the development of new areas in the field of radiocarbon Big Data work in archaeology and the dissemination of research findings through relevant journals, conferences, and seminars. They will also develop their own allied research project on a subset of the data. Opportunities to develop specialist skills in digital public archaeology, data management, 14C Bayesian modelling and GIS analysis are also envisaged, in collaboration with project partners.

The successful applicant will be working directly with the Irish Co-Principal Investigator, Dr Neil Carlin, as well as the UK Co-Principal Investigator, Dr Seren Griffiths, a UK based PDRA and a team of international collaborators. This position will primarily be based at University College Dublin (IE) in the School of Archaeology.

It is anticipated that interviews will be held in August/September, with the role commencing October 4th, 2021.
