The MaREI Centre is looking for an experienced Research Fellow to help deliver a new Horizon Europe funded project, Marine SABRES (Marine Systems Approaches for Biodiversity Resilience and Ecosystem Sustainability) which will commence on the 1st September 2022. The main goal of this 4-year project is to conserve and protect biodiversity by integrating sustainable ecosystems and a resilient blue economy.  Co-ordinated by the Centre and composing of 22 partners, Marine SABRES recognises that marine biodiversity loss is continuing to decline despite current conservation efforts. Reversing the decline in biodiversity requires rapid roll out of effective conservation measures that can also enable a sustainable and resilient blue economy. The project focusses on the use of Social-ecological systems-thinking and Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM), which are globally recognized tools to enable balanced marine development and conservation.  Marine SABRES will co-design a Simple Social Ecological Systems approach (the Simple SES) to rapidly enable and accelerate EBM across Europe and abroad. The project will then upscale this approach, working with stakeholders to set European marine management on a course to reverse biodiversity decline. It will do this through a process of integrating sustainable ecosystems and a resilient blue economy; enabling managers to make sustainable decisions; empowering citizens to engage with marine biodiversity conservation and promoting sustainable development in coastal and marine sectors.

This position offers the opportunity for an ambitious marine ecologist with proven expertise in Ecosystem Services/Nature Based Solutions to join this exciting from the project outset and make a meaningful contribution to its direction and delivery. As such, the successful candidate should have a strong publication record, excellent team-working skills as well as the ability to pro-actively drive the project’s work. They will need to provide leadership and show initiative within a dynamic team environment to ensure the successful development of the Marine SABRES, whilst also having the confidence to work independently to support the ongoing co-ordination of the project.
