Applications are invited for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher with specific translational immunology skills to work on an SFI co-funded project studying the role of myeloid cells and cell mediated immunity in SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory infections. The successful applicant will be part of a large multi-disciplinary collaborative research project involving high profile Immunologists and clinicians in Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, St James Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital. In addition to excellent research science, the post will provide an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to develop relationships and build networks within the associated Hospitals and the University.
The primary focus of Professor Keane’s research and laboratory is the host response in respiratory infection, primarily mycobacterial infection, with specific focus on myeloid immunometabolism and exploration of host-directed therapies. Access to patient samples from St James’s Hospital facilitates translational work in human cells, and the ideal candidate should be passionate about undertaking translational research that is clinically relevant. The successful applicant will undertake cellular immunology research on the response of alveolar macrophages to SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory pathogens, investigating the impact of environmental factors such as smoking upon immune function, and exploring new host-directed therapies to improve anti-viral and anti-microbial responses. To this end, the ideal candidate will have experience in cell culture, microbiological culture, RT-qPCR, ELISA, flow cytometry and immunometabolism.
Prof Keane’s research group comprises a diverse and enthusiastic group of researchers at various stages of their career. Emphasis is placed on maintaining a supportive and collaborative culture within the lab, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to integrate fully into the team. The group regularly attends international conferences such as the American Thoracic Society (ATS), Keystone Symposia, and British Society for Immunology meetings. We value creativity, honesty, respect, enthusiasm and dedication, with a focus on developing and mentoring scientists to reach their full potential. The successful applicant will be supported in developing their own research questions, applying for competitive funding, attending national and international conferences, and engaging in public outreach activities. They will also be invited to join the TTMI Immunology Lecture Series, Biostatistics Training Workshops and engage in other education and training opportunities available. A strong track record of publication (appropriate to career stage) is highly desirable.
At Trinity, we are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Trinity welcomes applications from all individuals, including those applicants with disabilities, those who may have had non-traditional career paths, those who have taken time out for reasons including family or caring responsibilities. We also welcome international applicants including those whom have been displaced due to war.
We are ranked 3rd in the world for gender equality (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020) and we hold an Athena SWAN Bronze award, recognising our work to advance gender equality. The University is actively pursuing a Silver level award, which it has committed to achieving by 2025. Trinity is committed to supporting the work-life balance and to creating a family-friendly working environment.
