Summary of Duties:

The Food Systems Program at Washington State University (WSU), in conjunction with the Regional Markets Program at the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), and the USDA Northwest and Rocky Mountain (NWRM) Regional Food Business Center, seeks applicants for a Research and Outreach Specialist in sustainable regional food systems. The USDA Regional Food Business Centers are designed to support a more resilient and equitable food system through providing localized support for small to mid-sized food producers, harvesters, processors, distributors and retailers and developing more robust regional supply chain linkages.

This position will coordinate the USDA Northwest and Rocky Mountain Food Business Center program in Washington State and collaborate with a wider six-state team. This will require collaboration across Extension, government agencies, and community groups to build stakeholder networks that can identify assets and gaps in access to resources and work to address them. Preferred candidates will have the skills and expertise to conduct participatory research and extension that engages underserved audiences in co-creating pathways to sustainability. We seek candidates who are eager to contribute to the community engagement and service mission of a land-grant university and foster our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the food system.

Required Qualifications:

Masters Degree in an agricultural, food systems, education, community development, or business-related field

  • Three years practical experience supporting small farm and food business viability

  • Professional development in diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual Spanish-English

  • Experience working in multilingual settings

  • Experience working in multicultural settings

  • Experience designing or leading participatory research and education projects

  • Experience or focused interest in local and regional food market and supply chain development

  • Experience and understanding of successful community development strategies

  • Substantive knowledge of Washington State’s agricultural and food sector and government and nonprofit entities and state, local, and federal government programs that support regional food and agricultural business development

Annual Salary: $60,000-75,000 | Commensurate on experience

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.  WSU offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes paid sick and vacation leave; paid holidays; medical, dental, life and disability insurance package for employees and dependents; retirement; deferred compensation and optional supplemental retirement accounts. Position Type: This is a temporary non-tenure track position.

Temporary End Date: This is a temporary position expected to end five years after start date. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.

Location: This position is eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule. This position requires the successful candidate to reside in Washington State and be available to work alongside colleagues from WSU Extension offices, Research and Extension Centers, (REC) or campuses. The successful candidate may also operate out of one of our Extension, REC, or campus facilities.
