Postdoctoral Researcher with the IRC Laureate project “MedIcal Literature and Communication about Child health (1850-1914)” (MILC), based in the Discipline of Children’s Studies at the University of Galway.

This position is funded by the IRC and is available for one year from 1ST January 2023(Negotiable) for 12 months.

The project:

“MedIcal Literature and Communication about Child health (1850-1914)” (MILC) is a comparative transnational study of medical literature about child health. It studies child health publications for parents in English, Italian, and French, comparing the discourses and strategies they used to convey scientific information to a non-specialist audience. MILC analyses the discourses, themes, and strategies emerging from these texts in relation to national health improvement programmes, and to ideas about bodily agency applied to children and mothers. Job Description:

Their key-role within the team will be to build a body of data on legislation about child health between 1850 and 1914, with a focus on France. This will entail:

• Field work in relevant archives, and data gathering through different databases.
• Analysis of the archival material, both independently and in collaboration with the PI.
• Production of reports on the nature of the material.
• Production of a catalogue of the material gathered.
• Dissemination of research results through conference presentations and articles in collaboration with the PI.

The ideal candidate will have a background in history or literature (19th and early-20th century); specialisation in the French context is desirable. Knowledge of English and French is required, and previous experience in in researching French archival material is a bonus.

Duties:

• Work alongside and report to the PI to develop a body of data on French legislation about child health (1850-1914).
• Perform archival research
• Produce catalogues of materials examined (incl. location for future consultation and hardware copies of the material, if any).
• Contribute to dissemination of project results with co-authored article and co-presented paper.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

• PhD in history or literature

• Research skills
• Language: French and English
• Archival research skills
• Evidence of scientific publication and dissemination of results at conferences commensurate with career stage
• Excellent verbal / written communication and organizational skills

Desirable Requirements:

• Experience in the French context
• Experience in researching French archives
• Experience working in team

Salary: €39,523 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)

Start date: 01 January 2023 (Negotiable) (12 months)
