The Ireland’s Border Culture Postdoctoral Research Fellow is a new research position based in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute, and in collaboration with the Seamus Heaney Centre in the School of Arts, English, and Languages at Queen’s University Belfast. Applications are invited from experienced researchers in the Art and Humanities for a project funded under the HEA North-South Research Programme 2021, to research and create an annotated digital archive of literary and visual art representations of Ireland’s border culture, 1921 – 2021. The postdoctoral research fellow will draw on literary resources (ranging across creative literature, literary journalism, travel writing) and cultural history (including cinema, photography, and theatre production) to research Ireland’s border culture through the collection, analysis, and annotation of literary and visual arts sources, from 1921 to present day. (A border culture is defined here as creative representation that refers to, depicts, or illuminates the border and its surrounding communities and landscapes.) The postdoctoral research fellow will then collaborate with digital humanities experts to create, present, and disseminate an online digital archive resource based on this material.

In the final phase of the two-year project they will also liaise with the project research assistant to provide an evidenced assessment, in appendix form, of how Ireland’s border culture has been produced and sustained through cultural
