Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 08 Dec 2022

3 Years, Fixed-term, Whole-time Post

Position summary

‘Time for Women? Gender, Chronology and Historiography before AD 900’ (GENCHRON) aims to integrate gender into a re-evaluation of time and chronology in medieval sources and modern historiography. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will play a leading role in analysing the construction of chronologies and the presentation of history in the world chronicle tradition from the Latin West during late antiquity and the early middle ages. To assess the role of gender in this genre, they will be tasked with creating datasets which – among other things – will quantify which women appear, when, why, and in which chronicles; and, in consultation with the PI, they will select certain key women for in-depth analysis of their role in the historical imagination of the time.

The successful applicant should have a PhD in medieval history, ancient history or a cognate discipline. Experience of working with late antique and/or medieval chronicles is essential, as is a willingness to use gender as a category of analysis. They should have a good standard of Latin, as they will be expected to work with the sources in their original language. Experience with digital humanities approaches and quantitative methods is desirable, but training will be provided if necessary and candidates should demonstrate their interest in developing such skills.
