The Role
We are seeking a Post-Doctoral researcher to work on the EPA funded Operationalising Resilience in Irish Climate Action (ORICA). Working with Prof Conor Murphy (Geography/ICARUS) the successful candidate will work with stakeholders across civil society, government, and industry in Ireland to map understandings and definitions of climate resilience, explore how resilience is currently being both formally and informally operationalised and to work with adaptation and mitigation stakeholders in Ireland to identify key leverage points for co-operative and holistic approaches for resilience across Irish climate action. This will involve a literature and policy review alongside ongoing engagement with an Expert Panel made up of civil society organisations, government, and industry in Ireland.
ORICA will combine both social-psychological research to examine individual understandings of resilience, and a systems approach to inform analysis of the evolution of resilience through policy processes. This project builds on work that suggests that social networks, rather than the form and volume of information is a key variable explaining whether people pay attention to climate change and enter into behavioural change that is adaptive or mitigative. ORICA will therefore empirically examine how responses to climate change and policies promote mitigation and adaptation through both formal and informal or ‘shadowed’ associations by using surveys and a workshop with key policy planners to elicit data concerning the ways in which such associations are manifested and lead to particular outcomes, in particular the implementation of resilience in mitigation and adaptation policy development. Placing individual decision making in wider complex systems analysis can help to identify the leverage and capacity achievable by an individual compared to the collective, organisational or institutional in dealing with the impacts of climate change. Stakeholder knowledge and lived experience is key to this project, it will be the focus of the empirical data gathering and a key focus of engagement for project outputs.
