Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2, UCD

Updated: over 1 year ago
Location: Ireland,
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 20 Sep 2022

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 2 within UCD School of Medicine.

Innate immune cells are the first responders in infections and essential for host defence and microbial killing. However, prolonged activation of these cells can contribute to oxidative damage and tissue injury. The expression profile and function of these cells are modulated by the microenvironment including cytokines, chemokines, and the microbiome, and likely also by cytoskeletal rearrangements required for immune responses. Our laboratory is interested in the connections between mucosal and innate immunity and the interaction of host immune cells with the microbiome and pathogens. We are using a multifaceted approach that includes animal models of disease, cell-based studies, microbe manipulation, and host-microbe interaction studies to discern molecular mechanisms essential for host defence, mucosal healing and therapeutic interventions. This project will study changes in neutrophils in the context of human disease and murine disease models.

This is an advanced research focused role, building on your prior experience as a post-doctoral fellow, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

* Cooperation with clinical departments to conduct cell and tissue analysis

* Establishment and analysis of animal models of infection and inflammation

* Sample and data analysis with advanced methods

* Interaction and collaboration with related projects inside and outside of the laboratory
