Applications are invited for a specified purpose post of a Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Statistics for Data Science within UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics.

The appointed candidate will undertake teaching and research in statistics and contribute to the general administration of the School and community more broadly.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics plays a central role in supporting UCD's strategic themes, in particular Transforming through Digital Technology. The UCD College of Science, to which the School of Mathematics and Statistics belongs, is undergoing an exciting transformation under the guiding principle of `data in science, science in data'. In this context, the School is enhancing and broadening its strengths in statistics and its contribution to the rich field of data science in the university and wider community.

About the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics

The UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics is the largest of its kind in Ireland and has over 60 academic staff from all areas of mathematics and statistics. The statistics research group is ranked in the top 150 in the world (QS subject rankings 2023) and is the highest ranked in Ireland. Research activities in the School are supported by a variety of sources including the €22M Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Centre for Research Training in the Foundations of Data Science (www.data-science.ie) which currently has over 40 PhD students in UCD, the SFI Research Centres Insight, VistaMilk and MaREI which are catalysts for interdisciplinary collaborations, the Irish Research Council (IRC) and through European Union funding e.g., the European Research Council (ERC) and Doctoral Training Network schemes. Individual fellowships held by members of the School over the last five years include two ERC Advanced Fellows and two Royal Society/SFI University Research Fellows as well as SFI-IRC Research Council Pathway Fellows and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellows. The School has strong research links with a broad variety of industry and enterprise partners.

The UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics offers the greatest choice in Ireland of taught undergraduate and masters programmes with programmes in statistics, data & computational science, data analytics (online), actuarial science, mathematics, financial mathematics, applied & computational mathematics and mathematics education.

The School and University provide a wide range of support for academic staff including dedicated research support to assist with funding applications and access to teaching and learning professional development opportunities. The School places particular emphasis on supporting early career academic staff through, for example, reduced teaching loads, opportunities to gain research supervision experience and local mentorship.

About the successful candidate

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain a leading research programme in statistics, including publishing in peer-reviewed academic journals, appropriate supervising of research students, and submitting competitive applications for external funding. The candidate will be expected to develop a research programme that broadens and integrates with current areas of statistics research expertise in the School which include applied statistics, Bayesian statistics, biostatistics, computational statistics, functional data analysis, latent variable models, model-based clustering and classification, statistical genetics, statistical network analysis, time series analysis, and actuarial and financial mathematics.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be committed to pursuing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across the School's wide-ranging programmes, and to contribute to the development and delivery of new programmes.

95 Lecturer/Assistant Professor (below the bar) Salary Scale: €37,909 - €66,011 per annum 

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines
