The Chief Technical Officer (CTO) manages cross-discipline practical teaching and in-course assessments in a suite of three teaching laboratories, running up to ten practical classes per week for up to 200 students per class.  The CTO is line manager to the laboratory staff that are responsible for servicing Biology practical classes. Currently there are four laboratory staff members, two Senior technical officers and two Senior laboratory attendants. Responsibility also includes the recruitment, training and management of approximately 70 graduate student demonstrators who assist in practical classes and mark submitted course work, both in hard copy and online.

This is an important and dynamic role whose primary function is to provide effective and appropriate technical services to undergraduate practical teaching (both in person and online) in Freshman Biology which spans the core degree Biology and Biomedical Science TR060, but also provides service teaching to degrees including but not limited to: Geography and Geoscience, Physics, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Radiation Therapy, Human Health and Disease, Engineering & Environmental Science, and any future modules and/or degrees that are deemed to fall under the Biology Teaching Centre. This role provides direct support for academic stakeholders across the Schools of: Biochemistry and Immunology; Genetics and Microbiology; Natural Sciences; and Medicine – specifically the discipline of Physiology.

Hours: 36.5 Hours Per Week

Salary: Appointment will be made on the Chief Technical Officer 1 Salary Scale (135B) [€65,644 to €81,759 per annum]

  • Candidates should give an example of a laboratory practical that they established and/or improved, the impact of that change and any lessons learned from the experience.
