Would you like to play a key role in ensuring the Health and Safety of our Staff and Students whilst obtaining new skills in support of our Research?

The School of Mathematics and Physics, at Queen’s University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint a candidate to the post of Chemical Safety Technician and Health and Safety Co-ordinator. 

In this critical role, you will manage the day-to-day running of the School’s chemical preparation laboratories for all staff and students together with undertaking the role of School Health and Safety Co-ordinator.  In-house training and development will also be offered to candidates with a suitable background in physics enabling you to provide specialist technical support and assistance with the operation of the in-house Taranis high-power laser system which has been at the core of activities of the researchers from the School of Mathematics and Physics for over a decade.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the School and become a key member of staff in ensuring the safe working practices for Staff and Students alike with the possibility of specialist training working with a state-of-the-art high-power laser system.

The successful candidate must have,

  • Academic and/or vocational qualifications i.e. HND/HNC and/or NVQ level 4 in relevant subject (or equivalent).
  • Four years relevant work experience to include:
    • Experience working in a chemical laboratory preparation area, managing the procurement and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials.
    • Relevant experience undertaking and managing a COSHH safety supervisor role within a large experimental area/school and evidence of a good working knowledge in COSHH risk assessments.
    • Experience managing health and safety documentation and storage. 
    • Experience within a safety supervisor role undertaking internal safety inspections in labs or working areas.

You should clearly demonstrate these in your application.

Candidates should also clearly demonstrate any extra qualifications and experience they have working within a physics related discipline in your application.
