The School of Education seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Language Education on a three-year contract. The successful candidate will co-ordinate and develop education courses in language education. The role takes an integrated view of language and literacy within and across languages, where ‘language’ is defined in terms of the entire multilingual repertoire and where ‘literacy’ integrates oral language skills, reading and writing, across different languages and across multiple media. The role is offered in the context of:
- the integrated perspective on language included in recent curricular reforms at primary, junior cycle and senior cycle (ongoing) levels and in government policy (the Languages Connect Strategy), each of which emphasise the importance of developing the entire linguistic repertoire in a connected way;
- the Literacy and Numeracy Strategy and the core position of literacy within the requirements for initial teacher education as defined in CÉIM;
- the 2016 Gaeltacht Education Policy and the 20-year strategy for Irish;
- the increased linguistic diversity at a national level as a result of continuing inward migration;
- the expansion of the range of curricular languages at post-primary level (recent addition of Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese at senior cycle).
