We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to support our Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory and accelerator mass spectrometry operations. The successful candidate will bring radiocarbon expertise in a discipline aligned with GNS Science’s research strategy such as, atmospheric science, groundwater, oceanography, Antarctic science, paleo-climatology, or paleo-hazards. The position will be split between day-to-day AMS operations and radiocarbon data quality, and scientific research in radiocarbon applications development.

You will work within our Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory research team of scientists and technical staff.  There will be opportunities to link with other researchers within GNS, nationally and internationally through new and ongoing radiocarbon- focused research projects.

You will have:

  • A PhD in earth sciences, physics, chemistry or related discipline with a focus on radiocarbon.
  • Expertise in radiocarbon, development and/or applications
  • Experience in an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon laboratory environment
  • The ability to interpret and clearly communicate scientific concepts through written papers and oral presentations
  • Competence in one or more scientific programming languages

The position is for permanent, full time (38 hours per week) employment and will be based at our site in Lower Hutt.  

The salary range for this position is between $80,700 to $136,600 depending on the successful candidate’s experience.
