The Opportunity:
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a post-doctoral position working in Dr. Maria Charisi's group broadly on supermassive black hole binaries. If you have experience in observations or variability studies of quasars, big data and machine learning especially for time-domain astrophysics, as well as gravitational wave data analysis with PTAs/LISA you are highly encouraged to apply. If you can connect your previous research to the above topics are also encouraged to apply. You will have the opportunity to join international collaborations (the NANOGrav, IPTA collaborations, the LSST AGN Collaboration and the LISA Consortium) and will benefit from extensive networking and mentoring opportunities. You will also have ample opportunities to develop independent research projects with the group or other members of the department and co-advise students.

The Physics and Astronomy Department at Washington State University is composed of over 20 faculty and lecturers with an active and growing astronomy group. Our astronomy faculty perform cutting-edge research in stellar populations, transients, active galactic nuclei and gravitational waves (LIGO, LISA, PTAs). The astronomy group boasts a tight-knit and inclusive community and is committed to the professional development of its early-career members.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a PhD in astronomy, physics or a related field by the time of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in observations or variability studies of quasars.

  • Big data and machine learning (especially for time-domain astrophysics).

  • Gravitational wave data analysis with PTAs/LISA.

Annual Salary: $50,000 - $60,000 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. This is a temporary position.

Temporary End Date: This will be a two-year appointment with the possibility to extend, should both parties agree. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
