Institution: Institute of Earth Sciences, Science Institute, University of Iceland
Open Until: 2022-08-02
The Institute of Earth Sciences (IES) invites applications for tenure-track research positions in isotope geochemistry, Quaternary geology, and geophysics, with a specialization in seismology. IES is an independent branch of the Science Institute at the University of Iceland and the centre of academic research in Earth sciences within Iceland. Scientists at the IES have strong international ties and organize and participate in a range of national and international research projects. Further information about the institute can be found at: http://earthice.hi.is/
Skills/Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree, expertise and research background within the advertised fields of specialization.
- Experience in leading research projects and obtaining research grants
- Collaboration experience, working in cross-disciplinary teams and ability to form research relations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Geochemistry: The scientist will join the geochemistry group at IES and is expected to conduct world-class research in isotope geochemistry with research focus related to geochemistry of the Earth's surface, petrology and/or mineralogy. The successful candidate is expected to participate in leading, constructing and maintaining relevant geochemical facilities, develop models for geochemical processes, and attract funding for future research. Laboratories overseen by the geochemistry group include a class 10,000 clean laboratory, gas and plasma source mass-spectrometers (IRMS, ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS), laser-based CRDS isotope analyzers, EPMA, SEM, Raman, FTIR, various microscopes and experimental laboratories.
Geology: The successful candidate is expected to conduct high-quality research in the field of Quaternary Geology with emphasis on the development of climate and environmental change in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. The Quaternary with focus on glacial geology and paleoclimate has been an integral part of geological research at the University of Iceland over 50 years and our goal is to maintain and further develop a strong platform.
Geophysics: The scientist will join the solid earth geophysics group at the University of Iceland and is expected to run a state-of-the-art research program in seismology with emphasis on Iceland and neighboring regions. Research topics may include, but are not limited to, earthquake seismology, inverse methods, active seismics, crustal and mantle structure, seismotectonics, seismological monitoring of volcanoes, earthquake prediction.
The institute seeks candidates with a strong international research profile, demonstrated excellence in interdisciplinary collaboration and a motivation to advance the analytical potential of the institute's research infrastructure. Selected candidates are expected to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program which incorporates the supervision of graduate students, at both the Master's and PhD level. Other supervision and teaching within the Faculty of Earth Sciences (School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, https://english.hi.is/faculty_of_earth_sciences ) is negotiable, in accordance with rules of the Science Institute (nr. 685/2011).
Tentative starting date is January 1st 2023.
Applicants are required to submit the following documents with their application:
Applicants must list up to eight of their most important publications and include a copy of these publications with the application or indicate where they can be accessed electronically. Applicants must include an account of their contribution to publications with multiple authors.
