The University of Iceland's Institute of Research Centres is now accepting applications for the position of director and research specialist at the Research Centre in Breiðdalsvík. The University of Iceland Research Centre in Breiðdalsvík was established in 2021, developed from the Breiðdalssetur Research and Heritage Centre, a non-profit organisation founded in 2011. It is intended to be a centre for research, in particular geological research. It is housed in the Gamla Kaupfélagið building. The director will be an employee of the University of Iceland, based at the Research Centre in Breiðdalsvík. The Centre operates in Breiðdalsvík and it is assumed that the director will work there.
The University of Iceland's Institute of Regional Research Centres is a group of 11 independent research centres across Iceland. The objective of the Institute is to provide regional research facilities and forums for collaboration between the University and municipalities, institutions, companies, organisations and individuals outside the capital area. The research centres' primary function is research in a wide range of subjects, which are related in some way to the immediate environment of the centre in question.
Main tasks
As well as independent research, the director is responsible for overseeing all operations at the Centre, its finances and day-to-day management. The director organises research and collaborative projects, is responsible for planning, and manages grant applications. The director must be able to supervise postgraduate students and perform other teaching duties at the university level. The Centre will work closely with the University of Iceland Faculty of Earth Sciences on research and teaching, in particular teaching on geology field trips, in accordance with agreements between the Faculty and the Centre. The Research Centre also works with the Icelandic Institute of Natural History; a project manager at the Centre manages the Institute's drill core collection, which is located in Breiðdalsvík.
