The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, in the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering. The Faculty¿s goal is to strengthen its degree programs and research with respect to engineering methods that enhance sustainable development. The Faculty seeks applicants with expertise in one or more of the following fields (in order of importance): building technology, building physics, heat and moisture transport in construction units, material science, impact of buildings on health, environment and society, sustainability in building construction, structural engineering for safe and sustainable infrastructure and built environment considering impacts of climate change, harsh nature and natural disasters.

The successful candidate will teach courses in Civil Engineering, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and will advise graduate students. Undergraduate courses are generally taught in Icelandic and it is expected that the candidate can teach in Icelandic within three years. The University of Iceland provides support to new faculty to attain proficiency in Icelandic.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in internationally recognized research, publish peer-reviewed scientific articles, attract external research grants, and actively participate in international projects and collaborations
  • Develop Master¿s and doctoral studies in the field and advise graduate students
  • Develop, teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Perform academic service and management duties
  • A doctorate degree in Civil Engineering.
  • University-level teaching experience in the specified field.
  • Demonstrated research experience in specialties that fall under the advertised fields of study and in applying and receiving research grants.
  • Have published peer-reviewed scientific articles and conference papers in the field.
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Good skills in written and spoken English.

The applicant must fulfill the requirements of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and become a Chartered Engineer in Iceland within a year of starting the position.

In hiring decisions, considerations will be given to how well the applicant fits the current conditions and needs of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The successful applicant is expected to start the appointment on August 1st, 2023.

  • The applicant must list up to eight of their most important publications, in relation to this position. The applicant must include a copy of these publications along with the application or indicate where they can be accessed electronically. When multiple authors are listed on a publication, the applicant must include an account of their contribution to the publication. Applicants are also expected to include peer-evaluations of teaching and administrative work, as appropriate. Applications and accompanying documents, which are not submitted in electronic form, must be sent in duplicate to the Division of Science and Innovation, University of Iceland, Main Building, Sæmundargata 2, 102 Reykjavik, Iceland.

    All applications will be answered, and applicants will be informed about the appointment when a decision has been made. Applications are stored for six months after the application deadline.

    The successful candidate will be hired for five years with the possibility of a permanent contract at the end of this period, cf. paragraph 3, Article 31 of the Regulation for the University of Iceland no. 569/2009.

    The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering is one of the six Faculties in the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The total number of students is about 160, thereof about 60 graduate students. The Faculty has about 15 academic employees. The Faculty has a strong international profile and numerous research projects are performed in local and international collaboration. The language of undergraduate instruction at the University of Iceland is normally Icelandic, whereas graduate instruction in the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering is international and normally performed in English.
