The Visual Studies Platform (VSP) at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for a three-month Visiting Professor position from April to June 2022. The position is offered on a competitive basis to a scholar whose research, artistic practice, and teaching engage innovatively with various visual media including photography, film, new media, animation and other digital technologies.
VSP is an interdisciplinary initiative designed to explore and promote innovative approaches to research and teaching visual imagery in the humanities and social sciences, and to foster expertise in this area across the University. The VSP administers the Advanced Certificate in Visual Theory and Practice (VTP), which is open to all students at the University whose particular research area has a strong visual component, either theoretical or practical. CEU MA and PhD students pursue the VTP in addition to their primary course of study. Potential candidates are encouraged to visit the VSP website and contact us for more information at [email protected] .

Duties and responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach the VTP core course ‘Visual/Aural Knowledge Production’, a 2 credit (4 ECTS) course (6 sessions, 200 min classroom time each) in CEU’s Spring semester from April-June 2022. They will mentor VTP students on their theses which engage with visuality through either a theoretical or practical approach, and take part in VSP activities, including attending screenings, workshops, and guest presentations. They are required to be in continuous residence for the duration of the term of the position.

Visual/Aural Knowledge Production course description: The MA-level, University-wide course is open to students from any CEU department. The course acquaints students with the principles of audiovisual research and is designed to expand on participants’ study by way of producing knowledge via aural or visual means. It thus aims to find modes of expressions that are complementary to the written components of students’ academic research. The course enables students to understand, analyze and confront in practice various aspects of media's audio/visual relation to social research. To this end, the projects undertaken in the framework of this workshop-based course may encompass a variety of approaches and methodologies that include blogs, photography projects, audio projects, and filmmaking. The course includes analysis of examples of a wide variety of visual/aural media, as well as in-class presentation and critique of student course projects.

Qualifications:

• Phd level degree in visual culture, film production, digital media or related fields
• Recognized scholarly and professional work
• Demonstrated successful graduate-level teaching experience
• Ability to contribute to curriculum development for visual studies
• Fluency in English

Compensation
We offer a competitive remuneration that is commensurate with experience as well as a dynamic and international academic environment.
The selected candidate receives 6,000 EUR gross for the assignment. VSP also provides shared office space at CEU premises upon availability and support from the Visual Studies Platform and CEU Mirabaud Media Lab. The selected candidate is responsible for their own travel arrangements, health insurance, and maintenance costs.
