The Open Learning Initiative University Preparatory Program (OLIve-UP) at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Instructor position for the Academic year 2021/2022. The OLIve-UP program is for students with refugee status or who are in a refugee-like situation. OLIve-UP will run between January and August 2022 and aims to help students develop their English skills from the level of B2 to college-level. The OLIve-UP program has two main program goals: (1) preparing students to make competitive applications to master's programs in English, and (2) providing these students with the disciplinary knowledge, study skills and English expertise to be successful students in their master's programs. The EAP Instructor will thus have a crucial role in the second goal of the program. 

 

The initial contract is for 7 months.

 

The successful candidate will oversee students’ English development and will be responsible for teaching classes, holding individual consultations with students and consulting with other teachers and program supervisors on the students’ English development.

 

Please note that we expect all OLIve-UP courses to be delivered in person at the CEU campus in Vienna. 

 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

 

The successful instructor will be expected to:

  • Oversee the Academic English development of all OLIve-UP students
  • Devise an EAP course of study appropriate to the students' level of knowledge that will prepare them to perform in an English language MA program (by the end of the course)
  • Be responsible for holding six hours of classes per week over two 12-week terms
  • Be available for four office hours per week
  • Take responsibility for all educational related aspects of the EAP course
  • Fulfill all administrative requirements including, but not limited to, keeping deadlines on submission of grades and progress reports, attendance documentation, and submission of any addenda to the syllabi that is required
  •  Aligning and continuously cooperating with the OLIve team and other OLIve-UP teaching faculty
  • Continuously monitoring students’ progress in academic English
  • Communicating with other teachers and program management about students’ academic English progress and needs

 

Qualifications:

 

You will be expected to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

 

  • University degree in the topic (MA)
  • Experience in successfully preparing groups of students (from various linguistic and educational backgrounds) for university study (essential)
  • Experience teaching in a higher education environment (essential)
  • Excellent organizational skills (essential)
  • Experience in designing and delivering EAP courses (essential)
  • Experience in using technology in the classroom (desirable)
  • Practical experience with educational programs that foster inclusion of students (desirable)
  • Engagement with social issues and commitment to social change. (desirable)
  • Experience working with people of refugee backgrounds (desirable).

 

Compensation

We offer a competitive monthly salary (pro-rated) of gross 3.000 EUR, commensurate with experience as well as a dynamic and international academic environment.
