The Democracy Institute (DI) at the Central European University (CEU) invites applications for a Senior Officer of DI’s Scientific Programs position. The successful candidate will play a strategic role in providing continuous support for executive-level professional work, creating the conditions of sustainable operations, and expanding DI’s transnational and multidisciplinary research projects which explore the multifaceted challenges confronted by democratic societies and politics in the Global North and Global South. In addition, she/he will have a pivotal role in advancing DI’s academic mission and fostering internal and external collaboration.  


 


About DI   


The CEU Democracy Institute is a young research center of excellence structured into six thematic Working Groups (De- and Re-Democratization, Democracy in History, Environment in Democracy, Inequalities and Democracy, Media and Technology and the Rule of Law) and its digital platform the Review of Democracy. All of the Working Groups host multiple junior and senior visiting fellows, our researchers are associated to international research consortia such as Horizon Europe, ERC etc. We produce cutting-edge research outputs, incubate new research grant proposals and develop hybrid outreach activities (conferences, workshops, public lecture series) to disseminate and debate the newest research findings with academics, policymakers, NGOs, social movement activists, and the general public. DI is currently developing a new portfolio of large-scale interdisciplinary international research and educational projects with partner institutions from both the Global North and Global South. 


 


Your duties and responsibilities: 


  • Support the Director in strengthening collaboration between Working Groups across DI’s current portfolio of research projects, to maximize research impact through collective efforts; 
  • Support the Director in developing and implementing an innovative, dialogic academic performance tracking and assessment process (mechanism) to maximize DI's research impact and support the DI's long-term sustainability as a research incubator for collaborative inter-disciplinary research on democracy; 
  • Support the Director and Working Group Leaders in exploring new collaborative research projects with academic institutions, think tanks and civil society actors (from concept development to funding application); 
  • Support the Director and the Working Group leaders in the dissemination of research results more broadly, with an emphasis on innovative, collaborative cross-platform formats;  
  • Support the Director and the Working Group leaders in developing and implementing impactful and sustainable dissemination and outreach with strategic partners. 

 


Your skills and qualifications: 


The successful candidate will have a PhD in humanities or social sciences with demonstrated experience in conducting and coordinating social science research projects. Prior experience with project management, coordination and fundraising at higher education institutions and/or non-profits is a plus. We are looking for a highly dynamic, autonomous individual with outstanding communication and organizational skills who is capable to propose and implement a long-term vision for institutional growth.
