The Human Resources Office at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for a Payroll Specialist position.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that CEU employees receive their salaries on time and in-line with their employment contracts, guarantee benefits and taxes are calculated, paid and provided, and make sure that all statutory and CEU reports of the aforementioned activities are prepared. The candidate will need to accurately enter data into databases (NEXON, etc) and ensure that the data is updated accordingly. Ensuring a smooth and effective cooperation with all service providers in this area is a key part of the task.


Duties and responsibilities:

  • Processing full-scale payroll tasks, including absences, and benefits calculations.
  • Managing tasks related to social security payment, administration and reports to the authority.
  • Regular maintenance of the payroll system (NEXON), updating and maintaining payroll records (salary, job, cost center, change of hours, etc.)
  • Preparation and completion of monthly and annual payroll duties.
  • Payroll deductions including tax, pension and social security contributions and preparing all statutory monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Processing and calculating salary increases and paybacks.
  • Maintaining an efficient, accurate and up-to-date filing system, including archiving of records as appropriate and in accordance with CEU’s policies.
  • Setting up new employees, processing terminations and related payments.
  • Liaising with employees across the university at all levels (staff and supervisors) on payroll related queries.
  • Liaising with authorities and partners - NAV, NEAK, Pension Funds, Nexon.
  • Fulfillment of monthly and annual tax obligations and reports.
  • Social Security data provision.
  • Preparing statistics on labor.
  • Issuing employer certificates, among other certificates.


  • Demonstrated (1-3 years) and also recent and relevant experience in payroll processing and social security payment calculation.
  • Excellent knowledge of Hungarian payroll legislation.
  • Good knowledge of the English language (verbal and written).
  • Experience with NexonBér and ideally also with NexonTime.
  • Basic level knowledge in Excel.
  • High-level of accuracy.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Ability to work under own initiative without requiring day-to-day supervision.
  • Ability to carry-out manual calculations.
  • Highly motivated with excellent organizational skills.


We offer a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience as well as a dynamic and international academic environment. The initial contract is for one year with the possibility of renewal.
