The Yehuda Elkana Center for Teaching, Learning, and Higher Education at Central European University (CEU) invites applications for the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. The successful applicant will work primarily in the field of teaching and learning in higher education, facilitating courses for doctoral students and faculty to prepare for or to improve their teaching in higher education; to design and deliver other faculty teaching development programs; to engage in service to the unit, university, and profession; and to a lesser extent, to engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning or educational research.

We welcome applications from individuals with a PhD or other completed doctoral degree; experience in working at a center for teaching and learning, education department, or similar unit; and an excellent record of teaching and faculty development in such a center. Appointment will be made at either the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, depending on experience and qualifications. The initial contract is for three years with the possibility of renewal.

Your duties and responsibilities:

  • Facilitate courses for doctoral students and faculty to prepare for or to improve their teaching in higher education.
  • Design and deliver workshops, training, or other teaching development initiatives for doctoral students and faculty to improve teaching in higher education or to improve the quality of teaching and learning at the university. These initiatives might include mentoring, workshops, teaching observations, advising university leaders, and assistance on teaching-related research.
  • Engage in service to the unit, university, and profession, including, as required: service in the above-mentioned teaching-development initiatives; service in administrative and/or leadership responsibilities; service in the revision or creation of new programs or initiatives; and service in university-wide groups and initiatives, especially those related to teaching and learning.
  • Actively engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning or in research related to the profile and mission of the Center. Scholarly activities can be on the individual level (e.g., conducting one’s own research, publishing, and presenting), as well as collaborative activities with other Center members.
  • If required, contribute to the design, writing of funding proposals, or delivery of grants or other external projects.

Your qualifications:

  • PhD, DPhil, EdD, or other doctoral degree is required (required for both Lecturer and Senior Lecturer).
  • Experience working in a center for teaching and learning, educational department, or similar unit is required (Lecturer and Senior Lecturer).
  • Experience facilitating faculty development for teaching in higher education or teaching courses about teaching in higher education is desirable for Lecturer applicants and required for Senior Lecturer applicants.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity or potential thereof in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) or other research related to the Center’s activities is required for Lecturer applicants. Publications in the field of SoTL or publications in other research fields related to the Center’s activities are required for Senior Lecturers.
  • Experience mentoring teachers in higher education in the early stages of their careers is desirable (Lecturer and Senior Lecturer).
  • Applicants should exhibit a passion for teaching, strong oral and written communication skills, collegiality, respect for diversity, and international experience (Lecturer and Senior Lecturer).

What CEU offers:

For the Lecturer position, we offer a yearly salary starting from a gross of 51,300 EUR, and the initial contract for 3 years definite term re-appointment with indefinite contract is possible based on the results of the review.
For the Senior Lecturer position, we offer a yearly salary starting from a gross of 60,300 EUR, and the initial contract for 3 years definite term, re-appointment with indefinite contract is possible based on the results of the review.

These examples may include articles; book chapters; conference papers, slides, or posters; programs of conferences organized by the scholar; open educational resources; grant or research proposals; or other examples of scholarly activity. Examples may include drafts and proposals, as well as completed outputs. Please clearly indicate the status of the materials (e.g., published, under review, proposed, etc.), as well as your contributions if there is more than one author or contributor.

Long-listed applicants will participate in an on-line preliminary interview in March. Short-listed applicants will be invited to interview a second time and facilitate an example teaching session.

 

The rank of appointment is at the discretion of CEU. It is not necessary to specify in the application the rank for which a candidate wishes to be considered. Generally, senior lecturers have at least three and usually six or more years of experience working in a center for teaching and learning or comparable unit and demonstrate excellence and leadership in teaching in higher education.
