The Department of Legal Studies at the Central European University (CEU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in human rights. We seek a colleague with an active research agenda in human rights and a strong track record, or potential, in research and teaching. The Department values interdisciplinary research and practical experience.

The Department of Legal Studies provides advanced legal education in human rights, comparative constitutional law and global business law and regulation. Our students are encouraged to see complex legal and social problems in their broader context and seek solutions across continents and disciplines. We particular welcome applications from candidates with expertise and experience in the regional human rights systems in the Americas or in Africa, and/or human and fundamental rights in the global South. Additional expertise in one or more of the following areas is an asset: human rights advocacy and litigation; (empirical) research methods in human rights, human rights theory and critical approaches, and/or environmental and climate justice.

Duties and responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to engage in research in the above-mentioned areas and to teach and advise at the bachelor, master, and doctoral level. Courses on all these subjects are expected to take place in interactive class settings. The language of instruction is English.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have a law degree and a PhD focused on human rights. Candidates with teaching and supervision experience as well as candidates with professional experience in their field of expertise are particularly encouraged to apply.

Residence
The appointment will be in Vienna.

What we offer
We offer a competitive gross salary of 62,500 EUR/year as well as additional benefits (e.g. pension plan). The initial contract is for six years. Contracts are renewable and can be turned into indefinite contracts depending on the outcome of the review.
