We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced scholar to lead the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.   The Head of Department will assume overall responsibility for academic leadership and strategic direction of the department. The successful candidate will provide leadership to develop and implement innovative programmes and courses; possess a vision pertaining to the Department’s research and impact work; maintain and enhance the Department’s collaboration with academic and industry partners and communities; manage, mentor and evaluate staff performance; participate in university governance and contribute to the wider academic community locally, regionally and internationally. The Department is affiliated with the Faculty of Education and Human Development whose Strategy (2022-2025) can be viewed here: https://www.fehdstrategy.com .

The research interests of members of the Department are mainly clustered around curriculum policy and implementation, assessment and feedback, digital learning and teaching, learning sciences, and professional and vocational education. As a member of academic staff, the successful candidate's duties will include teaching, research, project supervision, knowledge transfer projects/activities, programme and curriculum development, and programme and course management at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Supervision of field work and teaching practicum may also be required, as appropriate.

Heads of Department receive a responsibility allowance, in addition to their academic salary, and their duties take account of the workload associated with this leadership role accordingly. The remuneration package will be highly competitive and negotiable, and attractive fringe benefits, including housing benefits, where appropriate, will be provided.

All applicants should:

  • possess a doctoral degree and prior degrees in fields relevant to one or more of the department’s areas of interest
  • be an active researcher with a strong publication record in international peer reviewed journals
  • have a record of winning competitive external research funding as a principal investigator
  • be experienced in teaching experience with a commitment to teaching excellence (Qualified Teacher Status is a plus)
  • possess prior experience in managing people and leading change within an educational setting

Applicants should possess a distinguished record of achievement evidenced by high-quality publications, prestigious external research funding, and doctoral completions. Their work should be recognized internationally, evidenced by invitations to give keynote addresses, examine doctoral candidates externally, and join editorial boards of well-regarded international journals in their field of study. They should be committed to making a significant service commitment through developing less experienced colleagues via formal and informal leadership and mentoring. Impactful research that contributes significantly to policy and practice settings is also advantageous.

Applicants can apply for either the Chair Professor/Professor level and should possess strong evidence of research publications in a relevant field(s), external research funding and relevant teaching experience.
