Head of the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies
Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies (SSPS) is a research-intensive department that prides itself on multi-disciplinary social science research and policy analysis focused on the understanding of social, economic, political and geographical phenomena and issues, as well as their implications and challenges for policy making and changes in local, national and global contexts. The department’s faculty are engaged in a range of innovative research areas concerning gender, family, youth, community, citizenship, minorities, immigration, climate change, sustainability, governance, urban and social policy, business, finance, entrepreneurship, and social education. The department offers degree programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced scholar to lead the Department of SSPS. The Head of Department will assume the overall responsibility for academic leadership and strategic direction to the department in line with the vision and mission of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the University. He/She will report to the Dean of Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Roles and Responsibilities

Specifically, the appointee will provide leadership to develop and implement innovative programmes and courses in major areas including Geography and Sustainability Studies, Sociology and Community Studies and Public and Social Management; engage in research and explore funding opportunities; maintain and enhance the department’s collaboration with academic and industry partners and communities; manage, mentor and evaluate staff performance; participate in university governance and contribute to the wider academic community locally, nationally (e.g., the Greater Bay Area), regionally (e.g., ASEAN) and internationally.

Requirement

Applicants should have a doctoral degree and prior degrees in fields relevant to one or more of the afore-said areas, those with exposure to personal financial education would be an advantage. They should be an active researcher with a growing publication record and able to continue conducting research that attracts competitive external funding and leads to publication in leading international journals. Applicants should have teaching experience and a commitment to excellence in teaching (Qualified Teacher Status is a plus). They should be fluent in English with, ideally, some knowledge of Cantonese and/or Mandarin Chinese and the educational context of Hong Kong and/or China. Candidates with international experience would also be highly value.

Remuneration

The successful applicant will be offered appointment at an academic rank (viz., Chair Professor / Professor / Associate Professor), commensurate with qualifications and experience, and hold the Headship appointment on a concurrent basis for an initial period of about 3 years with the possibility of renewal for a second term.  Remuneration package will be highly competitive and negotiable, and attractive fringe benefits including housing benefits where appropriate, will be provided.
