The Department of Social Sciences aims to be an international leader in social science research and education that empowers citizens with creative, critical, and transformational thinking skills, keen social and environmental awareness, and the confidence and empathy to serve actively to better local, national, and global societies and the natural environment. Its strengths lie in the disciplines of sociology, geography, political science, business studies, and social sciences education, with research interests in the broad areas of gender, family, citizenship, minorities, climate change, governance, business, finance, entrepreneurship, and education. 

To further enhance its research and teaching strengths, the Department invites applications for full-time Associate/Assistant Professors with expertise in (a) Sustainability Studies, (b) Sociology and Community Studies, and (c) Personal Finance/Personal Finance Education. 

The appointees are expected to be active researchers and able to collaborate with colleagues on research that leads to publications in leading international journals and successfully acquire external research funding. The appointees will participate in activities related to teaching, research, project supervision, curriculum and programme development, and programme and course management at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

Applicants should have a PhD in Sociology/Urban Studies/Sustaintability Studies/Financial Education or related fields and preferably post-qualification teaching experience in the higher education sector or other relevant professional qualifications.  Applicants should provide evidence of achievements in research and teaching, and a statement of teaching and research interests. 

For the post of Sustainability Studies, applicants should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: climate adaptation and mitigation, urban planning, urban geography, and sustainable development. This position is expected to enhance our strengths in teaching and research addressing environmental and social sustainability challenges, specifically those confronting the cities of the GBA. Applicants are expected to have the ability to develop an ambitious and impactful research portfolio and a solution-oriented curriculum for our programmes in environmental studies as well. 

For the post of Sociology and Community Studies, applicants should have expertise in the sociological studies of urban development, and topics related to community identity, cohesion and resilience. Professional and research network conducive to our exchange and research on cities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) area would also be useful. 

For the post of Personal Finance Education, applicants are expected to possess substantial cutting-edge knowledge and research expertise in personal finance/personal finance education, and be able to teach and enhance the PFE programme. Applicants with solid networks in the field of personal finance/personal finance education at the international, national and/or local level(s) are preferable.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
