Assistant Research Officer

The Department of Philosophy (https://www.LN.edu.hk/philoso ) would like to invite applications for the above-mentioned post.

The appointee will join the ECS research project “The morality of risk: how to live morally in the world of uncertainty” led by Dr. SONG Fei (https://sites.google.com/view/feisongphil ). The appointee will be involved in an interdisciplinary project aiming at applying works from decision theory and statistics to address the issue of moral significance of small probability high stake events (e.g. Catastrophic events, existential risks). The research also aims at developing a new form of Consequentialism which is based on non-expected utility theory, that works better for offering moral guidance under uncertainty, and apply the theory to applied issues, such as ethics of pandemic.

Responsibilities

  • Literature searching and management
  • Literature review
  • Reading group
  • Admin works related to the research project (e.g., conference organization, social media management)
  • Help PI understand technical materials in decision theory and probability theory
  • Other duties assigned by PI

Requirements

  • Master degree or above in philosophy, economic, decision theory, social science, mathematics or statistics
  • Good knowledge of probability theory and decision theory
  • Good analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • A good command of English (being able to read and understand academic journal articles in English)

Salary and Benefits

The commencing salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits, where applicable, include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, and mandatory provident fund.

Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract for 10 months with the possibility of a further extension on related research projects.

The appointment start date is flexible and can commence from January 2024 onwards.
