Offer Description

Postdoctoral position in optical and radio polarimetric observations and data analysis. The candidate will have to carry on an optical and radio polarimetric monitoring of sources that i) have been previously judged as genuine milli-lens candidates within the SMILE project, or ii) have been discarded as milli-lenses but given the peculiarity of their VLBI radio morphology and their spectral properties, they can be classified as supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) candidates. Polarization, expected to be preserved in lensed images, is a powerful discriminant between gravitational lens systems and other astrophysical objects similar in morphology and physical parameters but intrinsically different in nature, i.e. SMBBHs. On the other hand, a highly variable linearly polarized emission could hint the presence of dual active nuclei (e.g. Gupta et al 2023 ApJL 957 L11). The candidate will participate in optical polarimetric observations at the 1.3 mt telescope of the Skinakas Observatory (Crete).
