The Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University offers the position of a

W3 - Endowed Professorship for “Medical physics and radiation protection” (f/m/d)

to be filled for the first time as soon as possible.

The professorship represents the field of medical physics and radiation protection in research and teaching and is assigned to the Department of Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology (Head: Prof. Dr. F. A. Giordano). Part of the professorship is the management of the administrative unit "Medical Physics and Central Radiation Protection" and the appointment as Radiation Protection Officer at the University Hospital Mannheim GmbH. The successful candidate will thus be responsible for the implementation of radiation protection at the University Hospital Mannheim GmbH. In particular, this task includes the function of radiation protection officer for radiotherapy, X-ray diagnostics and nuclear medicine. In research, the professorship will strengthen the department’s focus on Medical Technology and Medi-cal Physics research and develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the application of ionizing radiation in oncology.

The successful candidate should have a proven track record of publications in the areas of research mentioned above, successful acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects and international cooperation. A willingness to cooperate with the research focus Medical Systems Technologies and the other research focuses of the faculty (especially oncology) is expected. Active participation in the M2OLIE research campus is expressly desired. Depending on the scientific orientation of the applicant, collaboration with the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg (DKFZ) and/or the DKFZ Hector Cancer Institute at the University Medical Center Mannheim may be established. In teaching, intensive participation in the development and implementation of classes in the MaReCuM model study program and in the Master′s program "Biomedical Engineering" is expected.

Prerequisites for an application are a completed university degree, a qualified doctorate, and successful teaching experience, as well as additional academic achievements (a Habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or qualifications equivalent to a Habilitation) in accordance with paragraph 47 (2) of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg (LHG). Furthermore, international qualifications in clinical-translational research as well as didactic competence, cooperation and leadership skills and commitment to academic self-administration are expected.

The W3 endowed professorship is tenured (in accordance with the endowment agreement with Universitätsklinikum Mannheim GmbH). As a rule, and in accordance with the endowment agreement, a permanent employment relationship under private law is established with the successful candidate by concluding an employment contract (cf. paragraph 49 (2) of the LHG). A separate contract may be concluded with Universitätsklinikum Mannheim GmbH regarding the duties in managing the "Medical Physics and Central Radiation Protection" administrative unit.
