Peace Research in Natural Sciences

for a period of five years. It is envisaged to transfer the temporary professorship to a permanent position. The appointment follows a professorship at Technical University Darmstadt with a simultaneous grant of leave to carry out research tasks at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (Jülich Model).

We are looking for an individual with internationally recognised, interdisciplinary research experience in the field of peace and conflict research with a strong focus in physics research. The approach to a research focus in this field may be either experimental or theoretical. The professorship serves to establish the research area of peace research in the Department of Physics at TU Darmstadt. In addition, as a natural scientist, the future post holder will co-lead the new Cluster Natural and Technical Sciences for Arms Control Research (CNTR), which is being established at the PRIF in cooperation with the TU Darmstadt and the Justus Liebig University Giessen and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The research area of the advertised professorship may cover the entire field of physics-based peace and conflict research. Examples would include: Disarmament/arms control in nuclear or conventional weapons; preventive arms control in new weapons technologies, e.g. by means of artificial intelligence; consequences of nuclear war; protection of critical infrastructures, e.g. by means of network modelling; proliferation resistance in new nuclear technologies; monitoring and verification techniques – remote or on-site – e.g. for nuclear facilities, space systems, missiles; trace analysis and forensics; warhead authentication; controlled disposal of warhead materials.

In addition to an excellent scientific qualification, the successful candidate is expected to have corresponding pedagogical competences and the ability and willingness to teach theoretical or experimental physics in its entire breadth. Skills in science communication and consulting for politicians are to be developed.

The professorship is limited to five years. The position is tenured with a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German "W-Besoldung" and subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate. The regulations for employment are specified under §§ 67 and 68 HessHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz).
